Connecting a Physical Movie Collection to a Digital Library
Disc to Digital gave VUDU customers a simple way to scan an eligible movie’s barcode and add it to their digital library. It connected a collection people already owned with a more flexible way to watch those films.

A familiar object was the starting point
The service was aimed at movie collectors with physical libraries. A DVD case gave the experience a recognizable starting point: people did not have to begin by remembering and searching for every title in their collection.
The core interaction was scanning the barcode on the packaging. That distinction matters when showing the work. Disc to Digital did not turn the phone into a disc drive, and the experience should not be illustrated as scanning a bare disc or copying its contents.
The product connected the physical title to a digital offer. The person could then review the conversion and reach the movie through their VUDU library.
The service needed to explain what would happen next
Scanning was only one part of the journey. People also needed to understand the identified title, what the conversion offered, and the action required to complete it.
That makes the transition from recognition to review important to the story. A scan establishes which title someone has. The next part of the experience explains what they can do with it. The digital library is the destination, where the result becomes useful beyond the conversion itself.
These are distinct stages of the service. Showing them together makes the experience easier to understand than opening with a general description of a streaming platform or a large grid of film artwork.
My contribution sat within a broader consumer product
I worked as a UX Manager / Senior Product Designer at VUDU and managed a team of 4–5 designers. Our work spanned TV, device, mobile, and web experiences. Disc to Digital was one of the products I helped deliver within that work.
It is a useful example of the relationship between a customer journey and a commercial offer. The feature connected the familiarity of an existing collection to the value of digital access. Its interaction design and its explanation of the offer had to make sense together.
Disc to Digital was a team delivery. My involvement sat within that broader design and management role, connecting the consumer experience to the service VUDU was bringing to market.
Show the journey through the product
The clearest account of this work follows the actual experience: recognize a physical title, review the available conversion, and find the digital movie in the library. Existing historical product images show those stages and give this story a more concrete starting point than a broad platform-redesign narrative.
The delivered service connected a physical collection to a digital library. It brought together a recognizable starting point, a conversion decision, and access to the resulting movie across VUDU’s ecosystem.
