The opportunity

The original page describes several initiatives for children 12 and under and families. The goal was to make the streaming experience more family friendly and add value for Walmart customers.

What the experience covered

Parental Controls used PIN access and let parents set what children could purchase and watch based on MPAA ratings. Kids Mode created a child-focused environment for purchased and free content. Family Play could blur or mute selected scenes involving strong language, violence, substance abuse, or sexual content. Age-based Reviews, developed with Common Sense Media, presented information intended to help parents assess a title.

Design considerations

The work considered parent and child needs, including concerns about unapproved purchases and uncertainty about a title’s content. The original page lists constraints around linking controls to Kids Mode, preventing unintended purchase actions, metadata and asset availability, research for MVP paths, cross-platform parity, and reducing confusion.

Outcome recorded on the original page

The original page reports positive post-launch feedback about the additional parental controls and describes Kids Mode as a distinctive feature at the time of launch.
