PROBLEM/OPPORTUNITY:
Current layout is outdated.
Navigation is cumbersome (main nav + sub nav is clunky)
Merge and acquisition calls for revitalization of material design, information architecture, and UX.
Business objectives shifting - Must consider platforms where users are unable to transact. ie. living apps, native apps, fire tv.
Ability to migrate from LUA code base to Scenegraph which has more flexibility.
Information Architecture.
Fostering brand trust with existing customers.
SOLUTION:
Adopt a modern, more user friendly material design.
Redesign navigation to an expanded and collapsed version on the left side.
Consolidate buttons, icons, and other components, including poster image sizes.
Update the Media Details screen of individual titles to remove poster image and include a full background image still from the movie.
Re-align preview metadata and product parody to pre-existing AppleTV layout.
Adopt a hybrid approach to Discovery with list of lists, category “tabs”, genres.
Define personalization and suggested content based on user behavior.
RESULTS:
User testing results revealed “Collectors” (defined as users to typically purchase titles to create a library) and “Renters” (defined as users who purchase short term rentals) as finding the new layout to be intuitive. They reported that navigation behaviors were to be expected, however, some small changes to visual elements like large promo banners were unnecessary. Overall, user testing was deemed a success. It validated many assumptions made in the design process, but also helped the product teams to consider variations in navigation hierarchy.
